Urban Labs International Workshop

Recife

Brasil

The aim of the International Urban Labs Workshop is to integrate participatory approaches and citizen practices into urban development scenarios. The operational objective is to create a series of experimental urban furniture items from recycled materials, then to install them on two sites undergoing transformation, chosen by local residents in an online vote : a abandoned space in the Amarello district, taken over by a local association that wants to transform it into an urban square, and a former unauthorised car park on the banks of the river Capibaribe where a huge baobab stands, a symbolic and strategic location for the Parque Capibaribe metropolitan project that aims to reclaim the banks of the river and make them accessible.

The Worskshop is part of the UTC (Urban Thinkers Campus) programme, run by UN-Habitat in various cities around the world. The results of this workshop and other actions developed during the UTC Recife stage were presented at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III, in Quito in October 2016.
