The Reception Center for Asylum Seekers

Contacted by the City of Bordeaux as part of a participatory budgeting initiative, Bruit du frigo launched a collaborative design process to conceive and create an artistic installation together with the residents and staff of the CADA Bordeaux-Bastide. 

This project aimed to make the CADA’s indoor and outdoor communal spaces warmer and more welcoming, and to bring residents and the CADA team together around a collective project to improve their shared spaces. 

Bruit du frigo organized a series of workshops to collect drawings from residents depicting objects, memories, meals, and moments from their lives that they wanted to share and represent. 

Once engraved onto wooden “tiles,” the collected drawings form a colorful frieze installed on the facade, creating a visual focal point from the public space and serving as the project’s central theme, which extends into the interior spaces. 

In the reception area, tiered seating fills the space to make it more welcoming. Shelves can be pulled out as needed. Stools are hidden under the first step, allowing for increased seating capacity and versatility of the space. Cushions sewn by the residents make the seating more comfortable and inviting. The colorful frieze continues to unfold on the walls, along with a giant world map and spaces for displays and self-expression. 

The frieze comes to an end in the activity room, where its colorful theme is reflected in a range of furniture that creates spacious, inviting areas—furniture that can be easily stored and moved thanks to an ingenious nesting system.
