E’POP!, Espaces Publics Ombragés Portatifs. (Portable Shaded Public Spaces)
Winning project of the Bordeaux Métropole ‘Refreshing’ participatory budgeting scheme for 2024/2025

To provide shade and coolness in urban environments, we have imagined the concept of a mobile, all-terrain shade structure: the E’POP!
These modules can be quickly and easily installed in a wide range of areas lacking shade, for varying durations (year-round, seasonal, events, etc.). Built on flatbed trailers, they are loaded and unloaded like standard skips, using trucks equipped with a roll-off system.

As part of the Bordeaux Métropole Refreshing 2024/2025 participatory budget, we designed and built three prototypes of poetic and playful pergolas, providing attractive shaded spaces for people to meet and relax: the Jumelles, the Balancelle and the Nuage.

In their first year of experimentation, the E’POP! are setting up on the Simone Veil Bridge to provide shaded rest areas on this new crossing, which has been designed as a place for strolling, while taking advantage of the natural cooling effect provided by the River Garonne.

The next locations are yet to be decided: will there be E’POP! outlets near you soon? Will there be new E’POP! outlets soon?

At the crossroads of art, territories and populations, our approach aims to promote the transition to sustainable, shared and welcoming cities, by proposing alternative ways of imagining and building our living environment and by exploring new forms of public space.
