The Flying Carpet

As part of an energy-efficiency renovation plan for the residential buildings and the redevelopment of the outdoor spaces at the Parc Palmer residence, a conflict of use was identified: the parking lot of the condominium complex had become a playground for children.

To provide a more pleasant and safe living environment for the residents of the condominium, young and old alike, Bordeaux Métropole, in collaboration with the condominium association, commissioned Bruit du frigo to design and build a playful installation to encourage the use of the neighborhood’s green spaces. This permanent installation was created through a participatory process involving the neighborhood.

The Flying Carpet is the formal proposal conceived after a period of discussions during which we met with, talked to, and gathered information from residents of different generations in the neighborhood.  This design is inspired by an existing picnic practice involving mats placed on the ground.  The structure consists of three wide terraces that extend in a continuous spatial arrangement. It combines different seating configurations and allows several people to enjoy the space at the same time without having to sit too close together. The color, graphic design, and mirrored finish on the base contribute to the imagery of the flying carpet by creating a “magical” visual effect.

Following botanical advice from Antoine Tison, we planted a tree adapted to the local climate: melia azedarach, which requires little maintenance and is very drought-resistant. The growth of this tree will quickly provide natural shade for the flying carpet.
