The Champicnic table
Parc Pompidou
Pessac

A 15 metre table in the city centre!
As part of the city of Pessac’s participatory budget #4, two winning projects proposed landscaping the Parc Pompidou and installing furniture for the Bourrec market, which is held every Sunday on Avenue Pierre Wiehn in Pessac.
After having merged these two desires, Bruit du frigo was asked by the town of Pessac to design and build a generous and convivial piece of furniture in the park around which people can gather. Pessac has a large number of trees and a team of tree trimmers dedicated to managing them, so we worked with them right from the start of the project. The furniture was made from wood that had fallen during gales or had been felled during the upkeep of the forests in and around Pessac (species: oak and pine).
During this collaboration, we discovered that Sylvain, who is a member of the team, makes wood sculptures using a chainsaw! We wanted to make the most of this expertise and extend our cooperation by commissioning four unique sculptures from the trimmers. In the end, four mushrooms came into being, carved by David, Jerôme, Martin and Sylvain!
We wanted to create a long table where lots of people could gather and eat together. The table was designed with a view to keeping as many logs as possible in their almost unfinished state to make up the benches, then, in the manner of KAPLA, layering the other sections to make up the table tops and side tables. Once the logs had been selected, we called in Henri Nicot, a mobile sawyer based in Louchats, to cut the logs over the course of a day. The table was then assembled and the sculptures installed, with the invaluable help of Jean-Christophe, Sylvain and David from the trimming team.
The table was delivered and inaugurated on 15 May 2025 and saw its first market on 18 May 2025!
